Music to My Ears…

When I was just a young lad, I used to attend Bair Lake Bible Camp. I was reminded of my times there this morning as my eyes opened because today is my birthday.
Why does Summer Camp remind me of my birthday as we sit smack dab in the middle of Winter? Because every Summer some of the lucky little children at camp – even some of the counselors and staff – had birthdays.
We would all gather in the “mess hall” for our three daily meals and at some point we would sing the camp version of “Happy Birthday,” that resembled the song you saw slaves on a ship sing while the Roman soldiers whipped them to make them row faster… the words went something like this:
Happy Birthday
Happy Birthday
Aw-oh-oh-oh
Happy BirthdayO’ Happy Birthday
Happy Birthday
Aw-oh-oh-oh
Happy BirthdayOne year older and…
Closer to DEATH! (everyone slaps hands on the tables!)Happy Birthday
O’ Happy Birthday
What the heck were they teaching us at that Bible Camp?!? It was pretty funny back then, not as funny today.
So enjoy each day, because each one brings you closer to DEATH (SLAP)!
Hopefully you feel as inspired as I do…

I always envied people with summer birthdays for some reason.
Well, It does remind us of our mortality and if that inspires us to make the most of our time here, maybe it’s not so bad!
When I was a kid, I wanted to meet my fate nuclear style. You know, one second you’re sitting in math class, dreaming of actual fun things, then the Commies drop the Big One. There is the bright flash, and you realize, in that tiny fraction of a second, that your classmates had all sought protection under their desks while you stand up to look. Then the next thing you know you are looking at Jesus and you don’t ever, ever have to do homework again.
Happy Birthday (about two weeks late) from guess where? You got it, Bair Lake Bible Camp. I stopped this morning and sang Happy Birthday—the traditional version in your honor. Would love to have you come for a visit, or visit us at http://www.blbc.com. Great things continue to happen here, and would love to show you around. The song still occasionally gets sung, but it is much less often. Most of all it has always been my prayer that in a world filled with very tough stuff–sickness, sorrow and despair (that was also part of that song) and death there is great hope, and abundance of life available today. Have a great day, SLAP! You were prayed for today at 11:54am in Jones, MI at Bair Lake Bible Camp.
Bob!
Nice of you to stop by… thanks for the prayers, always love those. I just found it funny that I was awakened with a song from camp in my head on my birthday. All good stuff. Just getting older… I’m interested to hear the chain of events that led you to my website.
Hope all is well in Jones… God Bless.
Don’t think it’s bad at all… I just thought it was funny.
